In Your Mind

Paul Hagan's In Your Mind  (2018) exhibition is concerned about how we as individuals contribute to the development of our society. His layering of various city images creates a chaotic atmosphere suggesting what our collective thoughts and subsequent actions may look like as a whole. Paul's work asks us to be mindful of the ripple effects of how our own thoughts and attitudes can influence the world around us.

In Your Mind (2018) is about societal expectations and norms. As a society, our everyday thoughts and attitudes can influence and create our future, our actions, beliefs and indeed societal progression. In my belief, many people are too accepting of standards and morals that are not conducive to healthy societal growth. Therefore, the images and soundtracks are meant to challenge what we are thinking in relation to the development of society; “are we really doing and thinking the right things?" The everyday images constructed through the amalgamation of unrelated images, create “the fabric of reality”, and in many ways represents our collective thoughts and subsequent actions. These, in turn, affect our daily lives and in many instances reflect the growth of our society.

The footage is taken from the streets and iconic landmarks around Sydney and as such represents a part of city dwellers and all Australians. In Your Mind (2018) was originally presented as a holographic exhibition and is adapted to online viewing. My aim is to challenge the individual to think about what is “in your mind”.

This image depicts society in a time matrix cage. The astrological influences and clocks represent our reality as it currently exists. The city lights and iconic Sydney buildings are represented with the amalgamated everyday segments of our daily lives, illustrating the very fabric of our reality. With all of the interconnected elements can we choose our reality? If so why do we make decisions that do not benefit all? Perhaps this may change.

City Expression #5  illustrates the dark enticing city void of life, is it any different to our own existence? The sharp bright colours and lights punctuate the darkness of the streetscape and represent the brilliance of city life and yet no one is around. Is this city life or just buildings and lights? Do our own lives reflect the emptiness in this city streetscape?
