Dr Jonathan McBurnie

Jonathan McBurnie is an artist, writer, and the director of Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts. McBurnie has been exhibiting in Australia and abroad for a decade, producing solo exhibitions and participating in dozens of group exhibitions locally, interstate and internationally, and recently completed a PhD at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney. McBurnie’s thesis and accompanying studio works explore the shifting role of drawing in the digital age, emphasizing the discipline’s ongoing tenacity through tactility, adaptability, and eroticism. McBurnie’s work is an argument between established high and low art forms, and questions popular culture’s impact upon society, particularly in terms of building cultural identity, and in which ways can such cultural iconography be used to create a unique artistic vision, as well as a means of self-expression.
